Affinity for Anime Card Back

Work dates – February 2018

In an effort to begin to develop my brand as Affinity for Anime, I decided that a parody trading card game "card back" was necessary. Inspired by Magic the Gathering.

I'm quite proud of how this turned out and really challenged me to push the boundaries of some new Photoshop skills I have begun to learn, such as clipping masks. That was an essential tool that I had never used on such a large scale before that allowed me to work in several textures including the leather of the background and gilding of the letters, which makes this card back look like the cover of an ancient magical tome.

Work dates – June 2013 to present

Creating and designing original Magic the Gathering cards has allowed me to gain a deeper prespective into not only a game that I have enjoyed for many years, but also an understanding of game design in general. Working within the constrains of the rules system set up by the structure of Magic the Gathering allows for is a unique set of challenges.

In designing cards for my Tumblr blog, Affinity for Anime, there are two different kinds of cards I designed. The upper row of samples are existing (real) Magic cards that I used Photoshop to add new art. The art breaks out of the borders, creating a unique medium to work with artistically. The lower row shows my design skills to create original Magic cards in the same manner and style as the game's creators at Wizards of the Coast.

Related to my Magic the Gathering card design project above, I set my sights on a goal higher than just designing individual cards. I wanted to make an entire set of Magic cards meant to be played together, just like a real Magic set. Click here for the full card list.

Pokémon Map

Work dates – February 2018

Created with Adobe Photoshop CS5

At the request of a client, I created a Pokémon world map based on the shape of the British Isles, but in the style of map used by the Pokémon Diamond and Pearl video games.

The client was set to use this as a graphic on his Discord in order to create context for the setting of a fan-made Pokémon project.
